Week 9 Writing - Cecil Beaton

What is the main idea of the photography series in the book?
The main idea of the photos in the book are that they are all fashion photographs and society portraits.  He used to work for French Vogue and got his inspiration from his career.

What is the purpose of these photos?
The exchange and cross pollination of ideas between his collegial circle of artists across the Channel and the Atlantic gave rise to the look of style and sophistication for which the 1930s are known, and he wanted to show that in his pictures.

What photography effects does the photographer use to communicate the main idea?
Beaton uses high contrast in his photos.  His photos are all in black and white which makes the contrast even higher.  His photos are mostly portraits that have the person as clearly the main subject.

Picture and lighting talk

This photo i got off Flickr and i loved it because again, i love silhouettes.  In this picture the light comes from the middle left hand side of the picture, and the photographer uses a lot of contrast to make the picture as great as it is.  I also love the yellow tone to this photo.  It makes the photo have a warmer feel.

Artist Interview

Christine Cooney is my mom and went to Sage College for Photography.

What motivates you to make work?
"I love nature, and insects.  My favorite time of the year is fall because you have so many opportunities to take pictures and use vibrant colors of all the trees changing.  I also love seeing insects like butterflies and bees, and getting close enough to photograph them, even if i only get 1 picture."

What are you trying to communicate with your art?
"I try to show that you can really photograph everything and anything you want.  With the right motivation you can make anything happen in your pictures."

What is most important to you with your art?
"the most important thing is definitely taking the time to actually do it."
